Primal Encounters

Moose musings

This is the closest to prehistoric I can imagine. There’s something so unreal but known when standing on the same ground with such a massive animal. The muscle, bone, hooves and smell, everything about it awakens me. Soon as I become aware he’s here, everything else stops, all thoughts or feelings about whatever else is pressing, ends. I am now, in the moment. Fully present, completely alive, nothing else has my attention. It’s a gift that nature gives. It’s terrifying and glorious. This isn’t the tallest Moose I’ve seen here, but he’s the thickest and most beautifully colored. How does a beast get so much girth in so little time? I can’t imagine the power held in his body. Every ripple of muscle is life crushing might. There is the possibility that hidden within the memory fibers of my own dna is a moment when I charged him with spear or some other weapon. He was food for survival at one time. I know this, because I think about how much meat hangs on his gargantuan frame! That’s such a deep and primal thought. He probably has similar memories twitching in his reflexes as he stares at me and snorts. I can’t imagine he sees me as a threat but something stirs in both of us, I am sure.
